Invisalign® Q & A

How do Invisalign® Trays Work?

Invisalign® trays is a series of trays that work to progressively move the teeth a small distance at a time. Each tray is worn for anywhere from two weeks to a month. The patient progresses through the treatment plan until all of the trays have been used. In cases where more movement is needed, the dentist may recommend another series of trays to achieve the desired result. Invisalign® trays are molded to snap tightly onto the edges of the teeth and remain in place for a specific amount of time each day. The trays are easily removed and can be taken out when it is time to eat or a person is going out in public.

How Many Trays are Used During a Treatment Program?

Treatment plans can use anywhere from 11 to 24 trays. Each tray is worn for a specific amount of time. In most cases, doctors recommend two weeks per tray, but it can be longer if the dentist thinks it necessary. Each tray can be worn up to a month or longer, depending on how easily the teeth move. If the patient uses all of the trays in their treatment plan, the dentist may choose to create another set of trays if more movement is needed. Patients who have problems with the bone structure of the jaw may require other dental procedures to ensure the trays are able to work sufficiently.

What are Invisalign® Trays Made of?

Invisalign® trays are made of a hard plastic resin that is molded into the exact shape of the teeth that are to be moved. Trays are clear and are made to fit tightly to the teeth so that they snap on and off. The patient can remove them whenever the need arises, especially if they are eating a meal or getting ready to go out in public. The hard plastic material is strong enough to hold the teeth in a certain position without breaking or cracking. Patients can sleep in them and wear them during all of their day-to-day activities. Each tray is made to be slightly different than the others in the treatment plan.
