Dental Implants Q & A

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a used to fill gaps where one or two teeth are missing. During an implant procedure, the dentist will remove any of the remaining tooth and the root. If the tooth and root are already gone, the dentist will create a hole that extends down into the jawbone. He will then implant a steel or titanium rod down into the jawbone so that only a small portion extends above the gum line. Once the rod is in place the dentist will create a crown that fits on top of the post. In most cases, the crown is permanent and will remain in place for several years. Dental implants are most often used to prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting out of place.

Are Dental Implants Permanent?

The dental implants themselves are permanent. Once the metal rod has been inserted into the jaw, the bone will begin to grow around it, holding it firmly in place. An implant is used to keep the teeth on either side of the whole from shifting out of place towards the open area. Once the implant is in place, it provides an abutment for the nearby teeth. This offers each tooth support, while at the same time fills the gap making the mouth look as if the patient has a full set of teeth. The top portion of the implant will eventually be covered with a porcelain or ceramic crown to completely restore the look and function of the mouth.

Why are Dental Implants Recommended?

When a person loses one or two teeth in a certain area, the teeth on either side of the resulting whole may begin to shift. All of the teeth within the mouth work together to hold each other in place. If a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth have nothing to structurally hold them in place. Once the teeth have started to shift, it can throw off a person's bite pattern and result in damage to both the teeth and the joints of the jaw. Inserting a dental implant provides the teeth with the support they need, preventing them from shifting or twisting out of place. Implants are also beneficial when it comes to restoring a person's smile.
